It sounds like everything is right...

When you record, you record from the VCR input which has your receiver plugged into it, right? You are not recording from an alternate path such as a coax signal on to channel 4?

Try a different set of interconnects from the receiver to the VCR, possibly one channel is toast on the cable you are curently using.

And just to be sure I understand, the problem is it records at a reasonable volume level, but appears to be a mono signal? If it is recording very quietly or not recording at all then there are many more possibilities...
