Carver TFM-55: Replace or Repair?

Posted by Bob Wanamaker [IP: 206.183.23.22] on November 29, 1998 at 08:14:54:

Background: Carver amp, circa 1993; not many hours of use, and all use has been light. 1 month ago, the left channel died; Carver repaired it, checked it out, and shipped it back fixed; the problem was diagnosed as bad "pre-ins". Total cost of fix, including shipping: $300.

Well, it worked for about a week, and now the right channel is manifesting the same symptoms.

Question for anybody who has gone through repairs: supposing that I can get Carver to fix it for shipping only ($100), is it worth it? Is it worth another $300?

Needless to say, at this point I'm pretty convinced that Bob Carver's products and service are remarkably poor. I certainly will not consider buying any Sunfire or Carver products again, it's just too expensive and too much hassle!
