Getting Back Into Vinyl

Posted by Jim Stokes [IP: 144.29.1.2] on December 07, 1998 at 13:34:35:

So I got the VPI JR turntable and a Signet cartridge (AM30) and I'm running it through my system (Aerial 10T, Lexicon DC-1, Aragon 8008), I've run it for about 40 hour. The sound I'm getting is on a par with my CD sound. The turntable does have a smoother, rounder, less digital sound, and I'm playing/enjoying a lot of vinyl. But the soundstage is not firm and there is less detail and less bass. And... I'm running the turntable through my old Yamaha 870 (using the tape out to the Lex) because I don't have a phono section. So if there is anyone out there who can relate to where I am and what the next logical upgrade is to get to the promise land I sure would appreciate it.
I would also/really like to talk to someone who can make a comparison between the EAR and the AcousTech phono sections. Both get very good reviews but is the $1200 AcousTech that much better that the $800 EAR (particularly for my system)?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out with an oppinion.
Jim
