Tony,

While the Sony CD player is a weak link, I would upgrade your loudspeakers first. The Paradigm Titan is very good for an affordable, small system but I feel it is time to move up - possibly within the Paradigm line as they are just fine in my opinion. The Titan has a good resale value as well, which will help you.

Next would be the CD player - I have found it's not worth the effort to upgrade DACs when you are limited to optical cable. I own a Sony 'X303ES CD player that only has optical out (Sony should be shot for that!) and bought a Theta Chroma TLC to allow me to obtain a true upgrade in sound.. for you I'd say spend the $200 the Theta cost and $100 the Musical Fidelity X-ACT B stock DACs from Audio Advisor and put it toward a better CD player. Again keep in mind that your Sony has used value.

Then lastly upgrade to a better Onkyo or Yamaha once your speakers and CD playback is dialed in. Your Onkyo has a sweet sound, but is limited in current when compared to their better models and thus bass "drive" and "impact" could be better. You are still well above the common affordable receiver right now, and your Onkyo has a good tuner.

: Hi,
: I would like to know some of your opinions on how I should upgrade my current system.

: I currently have:

: Sony cdp-ce525 5 disc cd changer
: Onkyo tx-8511 stereo receiver
: Paradigm Titan Speakers on wooden speaker stands
: audioquest turquoise interconnect
: audioquest type 4 speaker cables

: The room is approx. 12.5ft by 14ft
: with a budget of about $600-$700
: what would you do to upgrade this system? Speakers? Integrated amp? DAC? etc...
: Thanks for any ideas.
