Hey I think you are in the right path! I feel the Paradigms would be find without a subwoofer (can't comment on the Tannoys). I like the idea of adding as time going on - buy the best speakers you can, then if you feel you need a subwoofer simply add one later. Keeping that in mind you can focus on midrange and treble quality more than deep bass. The Paradigm Monitor/20 would be a nice way to go if it could fit in the budget.

: Right now I am looking to audition the Paradigm Monitor 5 and the Tannoy M3. With the limited dealers in my area these seem like my best options. Both are floor standers in the $500 range. Don't think I can go up to $700 for the Monitor 7's. Funny thing about money, I never seem to have enough. :)
: If i decide on one of these speakers, do you think they would do fine without a sub? My room is 12.5ft by 14ft approx. Do you think I should consider adding a sub later? Possibly something like the Energy ES-8? Thanks for your help!
