Mike,
the solution is simpler (well) than reinventing the wheel.
There are kits available on the market, usually called Speaker Protector or something along those lines, that will do the trick. Judging from your insistance on having the relays mounted internally, I assume you know how to hold a soldering iron (don't want to preach to the preacher now, do I). Mainly, these gizmos monitor the output line for DC conditions and disconnect the speaker if a fault occurrs (ie. your speakers won't blow up if one of your output transistors packs it in; nice side-feature). In addition, they disconnect the speaker well before the caps start discharging and play Thumper in Heat. The only snag is that I know of these gizmos here (Australia), and can't help you with locating a supplier near you. Here the kit retails for AU$20.00, which is bugger all, and a US equivalent would have to come at less then ten bucks US (does THAT give me the craps or what?). If US Tandy stores are anything like the ones here, I wouldn't hold my breath for them having it. But be warned, you DO need some basic understanding of electronics. :)
PS: I am going skiing for a week in two days, so if you come back for more, you'll have to wait.
Good luck
