Turntable Upgrade

Using Mozilla/4.5 [en]C-BASF-CORP (WinNT; U):

Hi I've had a VPI jr turntable for about a year and am getting the itch to upgrade. During the year I have come to appreciate what I call the smooth sound that comes from vinyl. The turntable has an Audio Quest arm and a decent Signent cargridge. It's playing through a Lexicon MC1, Arargon amp and Aerial 10T's. Granted the preamp is digital, but I still get very satisfying sound.
So if anyone out there has any experience listening to like turntables (the Basis 1400 and 2000 have caught my eye) and they could share that with me I would be most appreciative.
I did have the opportunity to put my table up against a Basis 1400 and felt it made the VPI seem a bit compressed.
Please let me know if you think the upgrade is worth it.
