Well sadly I have bad news for you. Your speakers are indeed not in good shape. My recommendation is to replace them with new (or almost new) ones. Doing so is not all bad as while real wood finishes are rare, you don't have to buy as large of a system this time around. Speakers have improved a great deal since yours were new, so if you have become tired of those large boxes, you can live with smaller ones now and still have as good or better sound.

I will be glad to help you with some suggestions if you give me an idea of a price (no, you don't have to spend a fortune!), the type of music you listen to and if you prefer floor standing or bookshelf speakers.
