Alex,

As I am sure you know, the picking is slim when looking for a good analog cassette deck. Sony's ES line has some offerings. I have an older TC-K909ES, which was their top model at the time, and it does a good job. Definitely stick with 3 heads, which wipes the dual decks and auto-reverse off the option list.

Keep the used market in mind too. A lot of audiophiles are letting their analog decks go as they receive less and less use. Good bargains are to be had if you can be patient and wait for that good TEAC, older ES or I even had a Pioneer Elite which was a good performer (not up to the '909ES). Better decks are typically direct drive at all hubs and capstan - possible exception being a belt between the two capstans on some dual-capstan decks. Do beware of problems reported by many with respect to service and parts for Nakamichi decks, I'd avoid them.

Have you considered a trunk mount CD changer for the cassette-only car? I happen to be in the same boat, the car I liked best when shopping last was setting on the new showroon floor with a top-end cassette system (and steering wheel controls) which is a good sounding system. I listen to the radio in my travels, but if I traveled between unpopulated areas, I would have installed a trunk changer long ago.

Alan

: Could someone please recommend me a decent cassette deck in 4-5 hundred dollar range?
: Thank you.
