Sorry for the delay in getting back with you!

I would stick with component if at all possible. Before you head out and buy a bookshelf system with surround sound, I'd stick with components and take it a section at a time.

My recommendation is to buy a new pair of speakers for the main channels (of your future home theater setup) and enjoy it for now. Indeed while VHS does not work with AC-3, the format still has you covered with Dolby Pro Logic. DPL receivers are quite affordable today, but beware that the affordable ones are throw-aways (unlike your old receiver you have now).

I would stick with a major brand (say Polk or Paradigm as examples) where you can always go back and buy a center to match.
