Picking out a CDR machine

Unfortunately, that means those double deckers are out. They force you to buy the expensive consumer CD's (not the cheap Computer discs), and they prevent second generation discs. Since you have high-end CD players, I suspect you shall carry that criteria over when considering the purchase of a CD recorder. By all means, buy a high end or professional model CD recorder. Two brands come to mind: The Marantz CD-6 630 and HHb's CD-R 800 or CD-r 850. I would personally go with one of the later two. The Marantz I shopped down to around $750. I then abruptly stopped considering the Marantz and went with the far superior HHb models. I got the HHb 850 for $950 delivered. The 800 was the same price, but B-stock (it is last year's model, but extremely robust in build). Both brands will accomplish what you wish to do, and they both ignore SCMS. However, the HHb has far superior lasers. The lasers are very robust and weigh about twice that of the Marantz (and last much longer too). HHb offers a neat perk where you can select your SCMS mode. You can prevent all copies, allow one copy, or allow unlimited copies. The specs on the HHb are plentiful and excellent (search web!). I could find little about detailed specs on the Marantz.
