DVD Player capable of audiophile-class CD ?

I would say that if you pick one up for $700 you are getting at least a middle-of-the-pack $700 CD player sound. It certainly would be a good replacement for a like CD player. I was quite pleased with the sound of the Sony as a CD player, though, given it's dual-function capability and price. Right now I'm using it as a transport into a Lexicon DC-1 and the sound is very nice. I haven't had the chance to do any side-by-side comparisons with something really nice (like the Meridian), but I'd say for the price it holds it's own -- especially since I got both the Lexicon and Sony for about the price of a new 508. That being said, if you have the cash and are really looking for true audiophile sound I'd say you probably need to stick with the tried-and-true audiophile level cd players. If you are more interested in music and just want a decent DVD player, get one of the $400 Sony or Toshiba DVD players and spend your cash on a good CD player (IMHO). Shawn Harvey
