Running one output of your amplifier into the top and bottom inputs of a bi-wireable speaker would not change the nominal load, so if you have 8 Ohm nominal speakers by all means leave the output at 8 Ohms.

The idea you used, one amp output to two speaker inputs (one for high, one for low), is standard bi-wiring and is exactly what you would get if you bought bi-wire speaker wire.

It sounds to me that the problem is either the four-Ohm tap you're using or a mis-wire. Try hooking the top and bottom wires into the speakers separately for each speaker to see if they work well in each case. Switch back to the 8-Ohm tap as well.

If this doesn't work you have a problem that is beyond normal working parameters -- your amp bi-wired to your speakers should not present any problem to either component.
